• To start with, then, there isn’t very much: nothingness, the impalpable, the virtually immaterial; extension, the external, what is external to us, what we move about in the midst of, our ambient milieu, the space around us.

    Space.

Georges Perec, Species of Spaces and Other Pieces

    Settle

Our faculties of perception tell us where we are – sound and vision, in particular, allow us to locate ourselves and to situate ourselves in space. That being said, this quality of location is never entirely stable; the space we are in is always itself and yet is also constantly moving, shifting, changing – always different, always contested.

In these pieces, we’ve utilized techniques borrowed from the field of data sonification to heighten this shifting quality of space and to dramatize its relationship to time – also always stable, also always in flux. Light, like sound, moves through space, between us and the shapes we perceive as they settle in our minds – as our minds settle them or settle on them.
